Look Good, Feel Better

August 15, 2018

You’ve probably heard it before… “Look good, feel good,” or maybe (for my college girls) “Dress well, test well.” I’m here to confirm this cliche.

Ok, I know, I know…barf right? WELL let me tell ya, as a full-time working woman, if there is one thing that gives me a little extra boost (besides my venti iced coffee from Starbucks–extra points if it’s cold brew) it’s 5000% what I’m wearing that day.

I can think of a few different examples right off the bat.

Scenario #1

Come home from a long day at work, man that nine to five can reallllyyy take it out of a girl. So, here I am with a choice–I have been telling myself all day that I’d take my dog on a walk but then, out of the corner of my eye, the couch starts to call my name. Keep in mind, work clothes are about 10 seconds away from being thrown on the floor and swapped out for an XL comfort colors tee shirt from my college days.– So, again, here I am…Do I bum it? (yeah, we all have our moments) OR what’s that? Those new leggings and sports bra haven’t gotten any use… I go with the matching set and almost INSTANTLY I have a wave of energy. Not only do I get outside with the leash (& pup) in hand, but I am feeling myself, and instead of walking, I jog. It’s like magic!

Scenario #2

It’s Monday (or Tuesday, Wednesday…you catch my drift) 6:30a.m. I want NOTHING more than to snooze my alarm and wake up at the absolute last minute I can to make it to work on time. I mean come on, who cares if I’m wearing the crinkled up tee shirt dress at the back of my closet, instead of that cute structured blazer with pencil skirt and freshly steamed shirt, right? WRONG. Ok, so some of you might be saying, “but Megan, I just don’t have time. Not everyone wants to dress like that.” To that I say, ok, fine…but trust me when I say that waking up a few minutes earlier or taking a tiny, little bit more effort to put on something you know will make you feel like a boss babe (maybe even get some double takes in the hallway) can seriously impact your whole attitude throughout the day.

Even if you don’t exactly relate to either of these examples, what it really all comes down to are the little things & taking the time to put effort into yourself FOR yourself. That’s the biggest part, FOR yourself. Remember, you are the one who has the power over how you seize the day, attitude, outfit and all. So, don’t let the details fool you, they make a difference.

Now go out there, put on your best outfit, and treat the world like it’s your runway!

Casual Finds Under $30

August 6, 2018

Ok, I gotta get real with y’all this week. I love dressing up and wearing my favorite pair of heels as much as the next girl, but there is nothing better than throwing on your comfiest clothes and basically just living in them.

Whether it’s coming home from work, getting back from brunch with friends, or just slaying a workout at the gym, I come home and immediately reach for anything that meets criteria along these lines// 1) Soft 2) Loose 3) Effortless. I have a few staple items in my closet I always seem to gravitate towards. The best part is, all of them are under $30! Y’all seriously need these in your life– you’ll thank me later!

These joggers are the COMFIEST things, I swear. They don’t stretch or sag like some tend to do when you wear them a bunch, which for me is a huge plus. I am a repeat offender of wearing some of the same clothes a few times in a row…come on, you know you do it too! But seriously, that’s why I love these. They may or may not be Old Navy’s best kept secret.

The top is the a basic staple when it comes to casual wear. I actually find it hard to find a good white tank, so when I found this one, I snatched it up. It is made to be loose fitting around the waist/hips, but for this look I opted to tie it up on the side.

Nats fans, where you at?! A look with joggers just isn’t complete without a baseball cap, so naturally I had to rep my home team. (It was also day three hair…but that’s besides the point lol). I stayed consistent with the more sporty look by throwing on my trusty converse and tortoise shell accessories–and voila! You have yourself a super simple casual outfit that you’ll want to live in (& doesn’t cost an arm and a leg)!

In(vest) in Yourself

July 30, 2018

Happy Monday everyone!

OK, so maybe Monday’s aren’t always “happy” so to speak… BUT one great thing about a new week is a fresh start.

Anything that went wrong over the weekend, or even the last week, means you get a blank slate starting…NOW!

Personally, it has always been a challenge to stay motivated and optimistic when life gets crazy. It’s easy to get in a rut and believe there is nothing you can do to make your life what you’ve always imagined it to be.

Although it is easier said than done, all it take is a little time investing in yourself to get there.

So with that, I wanted to start off the week with a few ways that I think help re-focus your life, starting with the ever obvious…

Just start.

Ok, so maybe this isn’t so obvious. When I heard this advice, honestly I was like, “Wait, why didn’t I think of that?”

Think about it…all of the things you’ve thought about doing but you never did because it can be overwhelming and scary starting something when the end goal or vision is so far away or you don’t know the outcome (especially when you’re a perfectionist like me).

See, the thing is, all it takes is one step in the right direction to get on the path to your destination. Which brings us to my next point….

Just ONE right thing a day, adds up to 365 right things a year.

A friend recently brought up this point and it totally shifted the way I felt about what I see as “success” and “productivity” in a day.

Instead of getting down on myself because I didn’t get EVERYTHING done that I wanted to, it’s nice to take a step back and be reassured that I have accomplished something.

Something is better than nothing, right? Soon those “somethings” add up, and that’s a win in my book!

Which brings me to the next point. There are different types of “somethings”. In other words, there are so many ways you can invest in yourself and they are all important to live your most fulfilling life (well, in my opinion). Investing in yourself takes practice, but I promise it’s well worth the effort.

Invest in things that…

1. Feed your soul

Sometimes we get so tied up in all the factors of life going around us, we forget about ourselves. It’s important to take time to intentionally focus on what feeds our soul; learning, passions, reflection, goal setting, being thankful, faith.

I find that setting an intention every morning can REALLY help. Okay, okay…before you start thinking, “what a cliche”,  hear me out.

I’ve been guilty of hopping on my phone right as I wake up to check all those notifications too. BUT what if, instead, you read a bible verse or a chapter of a book? Or maybe you just write down one thing you are thankful for in a blank journal, piece of paper, your hand…whatever you choose!

Taking a minute to remember that you are the most important person you have to take care of, and practicing these simple habits, has the power to bring us right back down to earth. Just one minute is all it takes.

2. Feed your physical self

I don’t want to put too much stress on the “physical” image. However, I will say, a healthy body leads to a healthy mind.

When you get moving, all those endorphins get PUMPED! Something as simple as a 20 minute walk with my dog has the power to change my day. It’s nuts.

There is something about the connection between the mind and body that helps you go about your day with a clear and positive mind.

That being said,  it is just as important to listen to what your body NEEDS. Sometimes you are so drained, a nap is just what the doctor ordered…or maybe you just really need a coffee to get going in the morning (I know I do)!

LISTENING to your body is different than RESPONDING your body or mind.

I hear it all the time, “Ugh, I have to do a longer workout today because I ate that (insert “bad” food here)”…and you might be that person (I’ve been there, I’m not perfect). But listen, the difference between being in tune with your body and punishing your body for what it craves are very different things.

Now, before this gets out of hand, by no means am I saying you should go listen to that craving to eat a family sized bag of chips…but the point of fitness, health, and diets are to do what makes YOU feel good and helps your body operate and function at its best.

3. Feed your connections to others

This might sound obvious, or maybe it’s just my extrovert side coming out, but humans crave connection. It’s how we form our own thoughts and beliefs and grow into who we are as people. Connections drive self awareness.

If we all lived in our own bubbles, shut off from the rest of the world, could you imagine how boring life would be?

Surrounding ourselves with people from all walks of life gives us new perspectives and challenges our way of thinking. When you learn about how other people experience the world, we develop empathy and understanding which helps us to discover ourselves.

So next time you are starting to feel lonely, bored, or isolated and all you want to do is stay in and re-watch episodes of The Office on Netflix (which has it’s time and place), try reaching out to a friend, or go out for a cup of coffee and challenge yourself to just say “hi” to someone… I think you’ll be surprised!

A Little Added Flair

July 26, 2018

The work week is almost over! Soon all of you boss babes can hang up those blazers and pencil skirts, and have some fun with your OOTDs!

I don’t know about you, but it can be tough stepping out of the “office appropriate attire” mindset and gear up for the weekend. So, in attempt to spread some inspiration, I wanted to share a look I put together with a little extra flair that will be perfect for that next happy hour invite!

Did I say flair? Ok, so I added a little “flare” too. I am absolutely loving that flare jeans are back in style…90’s babies, you know what I mean! To take it a step further, I added this bell sleeve top to give it a flowy, boho vibe.

Hoop earrings and a long-line stone pendant complete the look, along with these fab booties (mostly to keep the bell bottoms from dragging on the floor… but I always LOVE a good heel)!

Alright ladies, now go out there and be fabulous this weekend!

As always, with love and coffee,
xoxo -Meg

May Favorites

May 29, 2018

I don’t know about y’all, but May has been one heck of a month for me! Between birthdays, weddings, nice(r) weather and road trips, I feel like…

1. I always have wheels on my tush

&

2. I am always looking for the right outfit for the occasion.

So, for this post, I thought I would share a few looks that I think are perfect for spring or summer events.

This first outfit, I wore for a day out in Charleston on my birthday. I am absolutely loving this side-snap pant look. While it looks super structured and put together, it literally feels like you are wearing lounge pants. Pair it with a simple A-line top with ruffles to match the embellishments and you are ready to go! The sandals were a perfect compromise between style and function (I was able to walk 4+ miles…I’d say that’s a win).

Shop This Look:

I don’t know what it is, but I am really digging the floral combos this spring! Normally, I go for red florals, because a lot of yellows wash me out, but this yellow and blue combo peaked my interest. The ruffles make an appearance on this floral wrap top (once again). To keep the busy top the focal point, I opted for a nude lip and a loose chignon bun.

Alright ladies, it’s wedding(szn) again! Time to stock up some guest-approved dresses for your closet. I chose this dress because the coral and red tones make a statement while the ruffles (again…wow, I’m such a creature of habit) keep it soft and girly. Another plus, the wrap-dress style is VERY forgiving. So yes, you can have that cake & eat it too!

COFFEE CHAT: are your relationships valuable?

May 29, 2018

Today I want to talk about something that I have been thinking a lot about– relationships.

This isn’t just about boyfriends or spouses, I’m talking any relationship. Friends, family (blood or not), work, the list goes on!

Recently, I have been faced with a lot of challenges in my life that have led me away from (& closer to) people, both physically and emotionally. If anything, it has really shown me what relationships are all about.

See, it’s not as simple as it used to be like it was in school or back at home. As you grow up, things start to change. The people you surround yourself with in adult life can’t always be a 15 minute drive away, and aren’t always constantly texting you to catch up…and that’s OK.

People get new jobs or go to pursue further eduction, or get married (again, the list goes on). What I am saying is, life happens, sometimes you don’t have control over it, but you DO have control over who you surround yourself with.

I heard something a few months ago while I was watching a talk show. One host brought up an interesting way to check in with your relationships.

Try this:

  1. Open up your recent text messages (or phone calls if that’s more your thing).
  2. Look at the last 5 people you have communicated with.
  3. Ask yourself, “Am I getting back what I am putting in to this relationship?”… be honest.

I found this fascinating. Immediately, I opened up my iMessage and went through each conversation… and, wow, did it really put things in perspective.

When you are honest with yourself about the give and take of relationships it brings a whole new meaning to what relationships you give value to.

Maybe you’ve been reaching out to a friend about a coffee date for weeks now, but somehow there is always an excuse…maybe, you’re the one making the excuses. Or, maybe that guy you have been talking to for a while hasn’t made an effort to REALLY get to know you or open up about himself, while you are ready to jump into a relationship and tell him your life story.

Of course, these are only examples…the point is, it is important to surround yourself with people who value and respect you just as much as you value and respect them. It’s hard to form meaningful relationships without reciprocity.

So, next time you get the chance, try out this little exercise. It may clear some things up for you about your own relationships.

As always, with love and coffee,

Spring Back from Winter

April 2, 2018

I hate to start this off with the typical “small talk” about the weather, BUT let’s be honest… it’s April and some of us are STILL getting snow. One day it will be in the 30-somethings, and by the end of the week, you’re debating pulling out your cutest cutoff shorts.

No worries, I got you girl!
I’ve found some perfect transition pieces to keep you seasonable and stylish during the winter-to-spring weather rut.

This blue tweed jacket is the perfect statement piece to keep you warm in the mornings without being overly winter-y. I paired it with a simple cream turtleneck, jeans, and suede booties. Add your favorite pair of sunnies and a purse to match, and you’re ready to go!

TRANSITION IDEAS: for warmer weather, lose the coat OR wear a simple tee shirt dress underneath instead of jeans.
